This ring, circa 1930's - 1940's, was produced by Knoll & Pregizer, established in 1887 by Theodor Eberhard Friedrich Knoll, a trained goldsmith, based in Pforzheim, Germany. The stunning blue and colourless sapphire case has remarkable elegance and glamour, typical of that time in history. Featuring 1.30 carats of sapphires in total, the combination of cuts and colour makes this a truly unique work of art, appearing as an almost micro mosaic set in silver rather than an arrangement of stones. The sapphires are each grain set, the central colourless sapphires forming a floral design with splayed petals. The sapphires continue to the shoulders of the ring, with nine on one shoulder and five on another, completed with a tiny crown to keep the watch running perfectly. The sapphire-studded shoulders lead to a plain silver band.
The top of the case is hinged, flipping open to reveal a Relide-signed round dial with gold-coloured Arabic numerals and a pair of delicate hands, contrasting wonderfully with the silver metal of the case, protected by a glass panel. The case, however, flips open yet again: although the base appears solid, a hidden hinge at the bottom of the ring allows access to the removable face and inner mechanism. The Swiss-made mechanism is intricate and beautiful, featuring pops of red; A ring that is fascinating from every angle.
The earliest published designs date from 1561, and the form reached its peak during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s. Their extreme miniaturisation made ring watches expensive to produce and fragile to wear, which is why so few survive intact, and they are snapped up by collectors. Ring watches were status symbols from their earliest appearance. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, only the wealthiest patrons could afford a timepiece miniaturised to fit a finger — these were commissions for royalty and the aristocracy, not items of general commerce.
