the antique late victorian nine old european cut diamond boat ring

This stunning ring, circa the late Victorian era (1880-1901), holds nine beautiful old European cut diamonds in total. The diamonds glimmer and gleam in the scrollwork gallery, held in a boat-shaped head that spans the entire width of the finger when worn. The head has three larger diamonds, captivating and brilliant with wonderful dispersion and fire. Two pairs of old European cut diamonds sit either side of the central stone, giving further variation in stone size and interest to this sparkling ring.
The diamonds have a wonderful character not seen in modern cuts. The very slight warmth in tone, with the stones being assessed as H-I in colour, combined with the old European cuts' larger facets and culet, gives a romantic and less harsh sparkle, hand-cut for romance rather than maximum brilliance. That said, the overall effect is showstopping: bright and beautiful stones that are lively and complement each other fantastically, set into buttery, rich 18ct yellow gold.
The head of this ring, with its scrolling gallery, is framed by engraved shoulders and slims into a plain yellow gold band with a polished finish. Inside the band, the faded remnants of a hallmark, possibly lost in a previous resize or through over 100 years of frequent wear. We can make out that this ring was hallmarked by the Assay Office of Chester, which ceased to operate in the 1960s, for 18ct gold, but any other marks are now illegible. Other than the faded hallmark, this ring is in good condition, with well-held stones and wonderful detailing.
