This mid-Edwardian-era ring holds five incredible stones, three bright, lively, off-round old-cut diamonds, spaced by two vivid turquoise cabochons, a fantastic combination of colour and sparkle. The turquoise are cabochon cut and draw the eye with their vivid colour, their domed tops with a vitreous lustre in contrast to the flashes of light reflected from every diamond facet. Over time, the turquoise stones have been slightly discoloured, not instantly noticeable but only prevalent when looking closely at the ring, though this only adds to the character of the piece. The stones are claw set in a line, graduating down in size from the central stone, and beautifully complemented by the 18ct yellow gold settings that hold them.
Though Edwardian, this ring shows true Victorian influences with its claw-set head, engraved, scrolling shoulders and antique diamond cuts. Old cut diamonds are typically round or off-round, as these are, with a high crown, small table, deep pavilion and visible culet. Their larger, hand-cut facets create broad flashes of light and a softer sparkle than modern brilliant cuts. Popular from the late 19th to early 20th century, they were cut to perform beautifully in candlelight. Slight variations in shape and symmetry give each stone its unique sparkle and personality.
The sparkling head of the ring is framed by engraved shoulders, slimming into a plain yellow gold band with a high-polish finish. Inside the band is the hallmark, stamped by the Assay Office of London. The hallmark tells us this ring is 18ct gold, hallmarked between 1906 and 1907, as shown by the date letter 'I'. A wonderful ring, circa the early 20th century, perfect for stacking or striking when worn alone.
