the antique victorian 1861 old european cut diamond five stone ring

This beautiful ring, circa the mid-Victorian era, holds five stunning old European cut diamonds in its detailed scrollwork gallery head. The diamonds are cut down, claw-set, slightly off-round in shape, with plenty of the hand-cut antique charm so revered in pieces from this time in history. Unlike modern brilliant-cut diamonds, old European cuts have a more prominent culet and larger facets, creating broad, warm flashes of light rather than a sharper sparkle - each stone has its own slightly individual shape and personality. The diamonds, totalling 0.56ct, have been assessed as F-G in colour, colourless to near colourless and with great brilliance.
Framing the diamonds beautifully is the scrollwork gallery head, a style very fashionable in the Victorian era, showing fantastic craftsmanship on this intricate handmade piece. The gallery lets in plenty of light, bringing out the best in the stones while looking beautiful from whatever angle it is viewed from. This detailing continues to the shoulders, where it has faded slightly from over 160 years of loving wear. It gently fades into a plain, polished yellow gold band, simple and sleek in comparison to the ornate head.
To the interior of the band, the hallmark. A crown and '18', telling us this ring has been hallmarked for 18ct gold, next to the Assay Office of Birmingham's anchor stamp and the date letter 'M' for the year 1861/1862. A clear and crisp maker's mark sits to the right of the hallmark, reading 'E&D'. A fabulous, romantic piece for stacking comfortably or wearing alone.
