the antique victorian 1884 garnet and pearl heart cluster ring

This unique, detailed ring has a romantic feel, with heart-shaped garnets paired with round mixed-cut garnets and split pearls. Three round mixed-cut garnets sit at the centre of the cluster in varying mid-purple tones, each of a similar size and line set. Surrounding the central three garnets are 8 lustrous pearls of a greyish to creamish white colour, a romantic combination of stones common in the Victorian era. At either side of the cluster, a sweetheart-shaped garnet lies horizontally, romantic in design and slightly varying in tone of purple. The stones have an ethereal feel, possibly due to the foil backing that likely lies behind them.
In Victorian jewellery, hearts symbolised love, devotion and remembrance. Heart-shaped gemstones were often given as sentimental gifts, set into rings, lockets and brooches. Two hearts together, as seen here, often symbolised a loving pair or the union of two people, hence the popularity of double heart rings in the Victorian era as engagement rings.
The stones in this ring are either claw-set or cut down, set to a detailed scrollwork wire gallery, handmade and delicate. Framing the head, shoulders that slim into a band, covered with hand-engraved scrollwork detailing, a true labour of love that spans the entire band inside a slight border to the band's edge. Inside lies a clear and easily legible hallmark for 15ct gold by the Assay Office of Birmingham. The date letter 'K' is crisp, telling us this ring was hallmarked in 1884/1885. The hallmark sits to the right of the maker's mark 'CR'. A romantic, delicate and sentimental piece of Victorian history.
