the antique victorian 1898 garnet, turquoise and pearl cross ring

A fantastic ring, circa the late Victorian era, adorned with a rarely seen yet truly stunning combination of gemstones. First, a central vertical row of three round mixed-cut garnets with a captivating dark orangish-red colour, rich and lustrous. Vertically, a row of 6 other gemstones: three light blue turquoise, opaque and cabochon cut, even in colour, contrasting the deep red garnets beautifully in their cool tones. Spaced between them are half pearls; The pearls are of white to whiteish grey colour and have a silky appearance, lending an ethereal look to this unusual piece. Together, the stones form a cross design, grain set into the horizontal boat-shaped head. The simplicity of the head is contrasted by subtly gothic scrollwork shoulders, framing the gem-studded head beautifully.
Multi-stone rings like this in the Victorian era were often steeped with symbolism. Garnets for love and devotion, turquoise for constancy and pearls to represent purity, or sometimes grief and tears when used in mourning jewellery. Multiple stones were also often used to display the birthstones of loved ones.
The band of this ring is plain and polished, slim and comfortable to wear. To the interior, a maker's mark, reading 'C.R'. To the right of this, a hallmark, still crisp and clear despite the age of the piece. This ring is hallmarked by the Assay Office of Chester, which ceased to operate in the 1960s. The Chester hallmark tells us that this ring is crafted from 9ct gold, made by hand in 1898/1899. A unique piece with plenty of detailing and a wonderful, historic addition to any jewellery collection.
