Circa 1900, carved oak monk’s bench/hall bench. The solid oak hinged top has scratch carving on both surfaces inside and out, with a foliate carving and a geometric diamond shaped panel in the centre with a flower head. On the inside is slightly different foliate carving with some mythical beasts’ heads in the centre. Left and right there are ribbed arm rests held in place by turned uprights. The solid oak seat is hinged and opens to reveal an uninterrupted storage space inside. There is a carved panel at the side on each end and on the front there is a fielded panel, again with foliate carving and a stylish border all around. Beneath this there is a moulded edge and the whole piece stands on 4 squat bun feet. The bench is clean and sturdy.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
