Circa 1990. Large handmade hooded Orkney chair of traditional form. Made with 5 large sheaves of hand-cut, oat straw woven and bound to the wooden frame with marram grass bindings, the drop in seat pad in woven marram grass. The David Kirkness style, shaped arms supported on rectangular uprights which continue down the side of the frame, resting on traditional chamfered square legs. In pristine condition.
The Orkney chair is probably one of the most iconic pieces of Scottish vernacular furniture and are highly collectable items, from being promoted by Liberty & Co in the early 20th Century to currently with examples in the Victoria & Albert Museum and worldwide interest from interior designers.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
