antique victorian revival burr walnut pedestal desk 20th c

A superb burr figured walnut pedestal desk, dating from the early 20th Century.

Of recessed broken outline, the rectangular top inset with an oval panel of gold tooled green leather, having a wide crossbanded border and a moulded edge with rounded corners.It is fitted with three frieze drawers and six pedestal drawers, three in each pedestal, all withdecorative feather banded edges and crossbanded surrounds. The desk is raised on ogee bracket feet with carved acanthus decoration.Complete with the original working locks and keys, this desk is certain to enhance the style and elegance of your study or library.

“Burr Walnut” refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produce some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find.
