Consisting of an occasional table (adjustable height) and adjustable reading arm (adjustable in height and width), held in place by brass rods. Standing on a cast iron base with foliate cast stem, and foliate cast animal foot. The label of ‘John Carter’s Patent Literary Machine – Trade Mark Registered – 6A New Cavendish St., Portland Place, London, W’ is to the back of the reading support.

John Carter was a Victorian inventor and cabinet maker and produced several designs of patented ‘Literary Machines’, operating out of his London premises.

The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
