Circa 1880, late Victorian/Aesthetic movement marble topped side cabinet. This cabinet has a staged back with an ebonised flat section and an open fretwork three quarter wrap around gallery, made of brass and gilded frames. It has a mahogany fore-edge with gilding to both the top and bottom. This is held in place by 4 squat mahogany ebonised and gilded columns, which are backed by bevelled edge mirrors. Behind these columns are carved corbels with scrolling C sections at the side and gilded flowerheads. The top of the cabinet is pink variegated marble with a chamfered edge and a breakfront section to the left and right. Beneath the marble is quite an elaborate gilded double ogee moulding which runs around the entire top of the cabinet. A veneer of amboyna is below this with an ebonised section which is patterned and gilded in the middle below. There are 2 panels either side with scrolling carving which has been gilded and has scratch carving. In the centre there is a large glazed door which is ebonised and framed with a gilded beading and inside is an unusual and quality single shelf with an ebonised, banded and gilded front. The sides and back of the cabinet are lined in leather which has been tooled and gilded in a simple geometric pattern with flower heads or sunbursts at each of the corners. It is very unusual and stylish. A breakfront section features to the left and right of the door, with 2 full length columns. These columns have a mixture of turned scratch carving, gilding, and ebonising and they taper from top to bottom with fluting turned sections. A central panel sits neatly within the 2 columns and has a carved gilt flower head section in the top, ebonised gilding and quite prominent aesthetic carving at the bottom similar to the form of an obelisk. Beneath this is a shaped apron with gilded flower heads on the left and right hand sides, scratch carving and gilding and the whole piece stands on 6 turned, ebonised and gilded legs. The gables are ebonised and gilded.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
