Circa 1920, Japanese lacquered drum. The very elaborate stand with its fan shaped top has painted mythical dragons on both sides, which occur throughout the whole stand. On the upright which supports it and the one below it there are 4 dragon heads, 2 on each side, which are painted in red. The drum itself is in a timber frame which is covered in skin on both sides. The skin or velum is held in place by multiple brass studding and there is elaborate painting on both sides of the drum. The uprights have stylish quarter block at the bottom and there is a trestle foot on each side which is solid and painted all round. There are 2 wooden sticks which have been painted and decorated for beating the drum. The whole piece is free standing, stylish and unusual.
