Circa 1810, good sized late George III mahogany and stained beech book press. The 2 sturdy uprights finish with a simple arch. There is a heavy duty cross stretcher and in this there is an aperture and the full length thread for the book press rises through it. It is finished in a conical top almost in the form of a beehive. At the base of this there is a turned cross arm for moving the thread up and down, and this is attached to a large flat section of mahogany which acts as the top of the press. Beneath this there is a similar sized piece of wood to form the area where the book is pressed. At the base there is a single full length drawer with a scribe beading on it and 2 knob handles. The whole piece stands on 4 simple squat turned legs with a taper at the base. The book press is excellent colour and condition, and very stylish.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
