Circa 1850, exhibition quality French mahogany freestanding desk. The large rectangular shaped top with three-quarter pierced gallery to the recently re-leathered green writing surface with blind tooling and gilding. With 5 drawers to the frieze with fielded panels, cast brass escutcheons, oak linings and unusually the drawers are the full depth of the desk. The shaped and carved pilasters extend to the elaborate quarter blocks at the knee hole, which also flank the outside of the desk. With further fielded panels to all the other surfaces, all with matching flame mahogany veneers. The 2 banks of 2 drawers are below the frieze and are over stout carved, turned legs with unusual pierced brackets, cast brass cups and white porcelain castors.
