Antique antique original large chinese red laquered Quinghai wardrobe / cabinet, citrca 1840

NOW PRICE HAS BEEN REDUCED by £300. 50 x 28 x 75" tall. Ingeniously constructed with pegs - no screws. Long drawers, side doors, shelves. The hinges, drawer handles and door hardware decoration are original brass. The narrow doors set centrally are typical of furniture from Qinghai in western China. A beautiful and rare piece that would add warmth and character as an accent piece in any modern setting, VERY heavy and solid. One small crack and lacks one of the hasps on the brass front panel else perfect. Cost £2,225 in 1996 ;-/ [ see photos]
Removable doors with wooden pivots at each end. The doors are slotted directly into the frame of the cabinet, resulting in a design with extremely clean lines. Cabinets include removable shelves and a concealed storage area at the bottom, covered by removable boards.
    * The Western concept of a wardrobe did not exist in Ming Dynasty China, as the Chinese would never hang clothes vertically inside a cupboard. Instead clothes were laid flat inside a chest or cabinet, or hung on wooden racks. Cabinets were also used in the study to store books and writing implements, and in the kitchen for food and cooking utensils
