A beautifully carved Italian Sgabello in solid walnut. This fine example has a coat of arms on the back panel with scrolls and carved lions supporting shell and fish motifs. The front support is carved with female shaped griffins surrounding a 'green man' foliated mask.

A Scabello is an Italian term for a specific type of backstool, originating from the Italian Renaissance when a seat signified some hieratic importance. Sgabelli are generally made out of walnut and consist of a panelled back and an octagonal seat, supported on shaped plank supports. This seat would often be placed in hallways, and was carved with a family's coat-of-arms. Its primary purpose was not comfort.

This chair is in excellent condition with deep fine carving and a lovely colour.
