    wiliam and mary marquetry chest

Antique William and Mary marquetry chest dating from the 1680s. The top with central oval with profusely inlaid and bordered by laburnum oysters. To the quartered panels additional marquetry work set within cross-banded edge. The sides with large cross banded border enclosing boxwood strung oval, containing laburnum oyster panels. The drawer fronts with marquetry oval panels of flowers flowing from central vase. The panels contained by boxwood stringing and set within book-matched oyster decoration with cross-banded edge.

The drawers are lined in oak and veneered on pine. They have replacement handles, but these have gone through the same holes as the originals, there being in effect no handle damage. The marks of where the original pear drop handles have swung can be seen on the drawer front. This is an opportunity to purchase an early English chest currently awaiting restoration.

See John Andrews ‘British Antique Furniture’ ACC Fig 328 Page.172 1989 edition. An interesting chest, but lacking the oyster borders.
