vintage victorian revival burr walnut pedestal desk 5ftx3ft 20th c

This is an exquisite vintageburr walnut pedestaldesk dating from the late 20th Century.

This desk has been accomplished in the Victorian manner and was beautifully made by a craftsman from burr walnut with oak lined drawers and attractive 'feathered'crossbanding.The top is inset with a superb inset tooled leather writing surface which has been hand tooled with gold leaf decoration. The brass drop handles are typical of the period and add elegance to this sumptuous item.The desk features three drawers in the frieze with a drawer above a double depth drawer in each pedestal, the double drawers are fitted out as filing cabinets.

Burr Walnut
refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find.
