Antique Sheraton Revival Edwardian Mahogany Elbow Chair c1905

A fine elegant Sheraton revival Edwardian solid mahogany elbow chair c1905. Central fluted vase-shaped splat with wheatsheaf and stylised acanthus carved decoration flanked by two vertical fine moulded splats and moulded back-frame. Characteristic Sheraton stepped-arched cresting rail. Shaped arms with curved arm supports, both with carved mouldings ensuite with back rails. Drop-in upholstered seat and solid mahogany seat rails with ovolo outer-edge detail. Supported by square tapered front legs with continued ovolo outer-edge detail. Solid mahogany stretchers. Height to top of back-rail is 95 cm. Maximum width 55 cm. Height to top of seat is 46 cm, depth of seat 42 cm.
The chair is in excellent condition commensurate with age – excepting upholstery. All solid mahogany frames are sound and all joints solid. The chair retains its original finish. Current upholstery on its drop-in seat is serviceable but would benefit from being re-upholstered. We offer the option to purchase the chair as it is or for a small additional cost, we can re-upholster its seat in your choice of fabric. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.

This design of chair back is illustrated in “Sheraton Furniture” by Ralph Fastnedge (p138 plate 10). Based on a Hepplewhite design of 1787 appearing in “The Guide” and Sheraton’s appendix of 1794 3rd edition of “The Drawing Book”. Original is part of the V&A collection.
