set of four mahogany chairs, including two armchairs, 18th century circa 1760, chippendale style

As you will see from the photographs this is a most fascinating set of mid 18th century chairs. The design of the square section stretchers is highly unusual, being found on very few other examples. The bead and reel carving to the front legs and the foliate "ears" lift the quality still further.

One of the side chairs is believed to be wholly original 18th century. The other side chair and armchair have varying degrees of 19th, or very early 20th century, restoration, primarily the replacement of seat rails. It is believed that the "show wood" is 18th century. One armchair is a copy.These details can be seen from the photographs. Of course more are available if you wish to see something in particular, don't hesitate to ask. On one of the seat rails appears to be a makers mark, which has not been identified. This could be a four-leaf clover...The upholstery is generally sound, although that in the older side chair could do with some conservation. The set would be transformed and look stunning with a quality damask!Collection from North Oxfordshire, delivery can be arranged for an extra fee.
