Circa 1870, very unusual and stylish Pugin style mahogany metamorphic chair. The back splat has an arched section and in the centre there is a carved fleur-de-lis. This piece is screwed to the uprights, and the screw holes have been covered by large circular roundels. The wood above and below this is chamfered in the Gothic style. There is a solid mahogany seat which is hinged towards the front. Underneath at the back there is a small clip to hold the chair in position. When the chair is unhinged and folded over it forms a neat sized set of 4 steps. Each of the shelves is heavily impregnated with the marks from shoes over time. Normally these chairs are in oak and it is unusual to find one in mahogany in such good condition.
