Circa 1860, mid Victorian burr walnut jack in the box Davenport desk. There is a classic cast brass open fretwork three quality gallery on top. The flat surface has wonderful burr walnut veneers, and this is all framed with a steep ogee moulding. There is a mechanism inside one of the drawers which releases the top section, which pops up to reveal various shaped pigeon holes. This is spring loaded, and can push back down to lock into position. The davenport itself has a shaped flap with a long piano hinge, which opens to reveal a pull out slide with its original green tooled and gilded writing surface and two narrow drawers with small walnut knob handles. The slide is hinged at the front and can be lifted to make a writing slope. To the right of this is a pen slide and two ink wells. On one side of the davenport are four drawers with turned knob handles and on the opposite side are dummy drawers. On the back is a burr walnut fielded panel, and all of the back is polished. At the front elaborate open carved quarter brackets. All standing on large turned bezels which are hollowed out to contain the original brass and white porcelain castors.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
