Circa 1890, Jacobean style carved oak monks bench. The large rectangular top has a carved edge of demi lune flower heads and one large acanthus leaf on each end. The top is hinged and pushes back to become the bench. There is similar carving on the inside. The seat has 2 wrought iron strap hinges and opens to reveal a storage space inside. The arms have a simple turning on the front and are held in place by 2 turned columns. There are carved fielded on the sides and 3 further similar panels on the front with various carvings. The back is also polished and carved the same as the front. The whole piece stands on an enclosed plinth. Sturdy and functional piece.
