On offer here is a very nice Georgian sterling silver ring neck meat skewer hallmarked for Eley, Fearn and Chawner, London 1809. This skewer, which measures 33 cms in length and weighs 112g, comes in very good condition, commensurate with age; no faults. The unicorn's head crest was used by upwards of a hundred British families (see Fairbairn's Book of Crests plate 49 no.5). These skewers were of course once used for hanging meat, and no doubt still are to-day; although many are now used as letter openers, and other uses in the kitchen can be envisaged, such as testing if a cooked or baked item is ready for pulling out of the oven.
