An unusual Victorian Irish walnut and burr walnut campaign writing desk

the rectangular moulded edge top inset with a tooled green leather top (distressed) above a frieze drawer and kneehole flanked by four short drawers above scroll carved aprons and ring turned tapering legs with beaded collars, cappings and castors, with a gilt metal trade label inset to the central drawer, ROSS & Co, MANUFACTURERS, 9,10,11 ELLIS QUAY, DUBLIN, 117cm wide, 67cm deep, 75cm high (46" wide, 26" deep, 29.5" high).

Ross of Dublin were one of the most respected producers of campaign furniture in the 19th century. The firm was founded by James Ross and Patrick Murphy in 1821 at Ellis Quay where the business was to trade throughout its existence until closure in 1907. In 1855 E. Ross is recorded in the Dublin Street Directory under 'nobility, gentry, merchants and traders' as 'army cabinet furniture, portmanteau, and camp equipage manufactory. The firm traded as Ross and Co from 1860, brass plaques similar to the one on the piece offered here, where attached to pieces made in 1863 as wedding presents for Captain Benjamin Simner of the 76th Regiment, the furniture was offered Phillips, London, 5 June 1990, lot 137 and is also illustrated in N.Brawer, British Campaign Furniture, Elegance under Canvas 1740-1914, New York 2001, pages 41-43. In 1896 the firm were still listed at Ellis Quay as 'Camp furniture manufacturers and upholsterers to H.R.H the Prince of Wales, invalid furniture manufacturers.Established in 1971,Moseley Antiques is a family business with a large shop in Stockport near Manchester.
