antique victorian burr walnut inlaid 3 door credenza c.1880 19th c

This is a lovely antique Victorian burr walnut, marquetry inlaid and ormolu mounted credenza, circa 1880 in date.

The credenza features a moulded shaped top above three glazed doors. The credenza has decorative tulipwood crossbanding with boxwood stringing and original ormolu mounts.It is raised on a shaped plinth base, is fitted with working locks and has two adjustable shelves to the interior.Its attention to detail and lavish decoration are certain to draw the eye wherever you choose to place it in your home.

Burr Walnut refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produce some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find.Acredenzais a piece of furniture that became very fashionable during the second half of the 19th century. Often made of aburnishedand polished wood decorated withmarquetry, a centralcupboardwould be flanked by symmetricalquadrantglassdisplay cabinets. The top would often be made of marble, or another decorative stone, or of inlaid wood.
