Circa 1800, French marble top walnut commode. The breakfront grey variegated marble top has a moulded edge, and the chest beneath follows the form of the marble. On the top there is one long drawer with bow-ends, and the drawer at each end have a convex section as it joins the centre. Each of these has a circular cast brass handle and a geometric parquetry pattern on the drawer fronts. There are two further drawers which again have cast brass handles and stylish escutcheons in the centre with a keyhole which is surmounted by swags and tails. There’s a mixture of parquetry and quarter veneers on these drawers. Beneath the centre drawer at the bottom, there is a deep apron with an ormolu foliate casting. The gables of the chest of drawers have a similar geometric pattern to that of front, and the front edges are canted with an ormolu mount and elongated inlaid panels below. As the chest of drawers heads towards its back legs, there is a small curved section which makes the piece kick out. At the front, there are two cabriole legs with stylish castings on the top, which continues down and forms an animalistic foot at the base.
