Circa 1860, stylish and unusual coromandel writing table. This freestanding writing table has a raised section with a wraparound brass gallery, and is held in place by four turned, ebonised, tapering and reeded columns. At the base at the back is another brass gallery. The top is crossbanded in coromandel and has a brown leather writing surface which is gilded and tooled, and appears to be original to the desk. The fore edge has a fine brass beading. Below this are two drawers with coromandel facings and brass beading framing the drawer fronts and large stylish cast and gilded escutcheons. The ends are bow fronted, again with gilded mounts and framed with brass beading. At the top of the legs is a panel with foliate casting, and the legs are very stylish; turned, tapering and fluted with gilded casting inside the top of fluting the form of foliate tails. These finish on a brass cup castor. Unusual to find desks of this size in coromandel. The colour is wonderful and original, with its dark and light stripes.
