A beautiful example this, likely made during the 19thc in south China around 1870 to 90, it does not conform to more northern pattern dao's, the blade has been cleaned but not etched but even so still it shows what appears to be a high carbon steel inserted edge, if etched no doubt it would show an interesting burl type laminate pattern and likely an inserted edge for hardness would show, it is very wide wide and slightly flexible but this dao is 100% a two handed sword, still very sharp and although large and heavy it is very well balanced even in one hand.
The blade is very thick at the guard end but distal tapering towards its tip making the balance perfect.
The hilt is long on this dao, it is made from hardwood and still has its original faded kingfisher green cord wrap, this I have seen on many south Chinese military daos so I think it very possible that this is military.
The guard is made from solid brass, and the region which covers the front hand of the user is perfect for any size hand, a smaller Chinese hand than mine would have plenty of room and it certainly would stop any sword cuts from getting to the grip hand, the ferrules at guard and and pommel end are also in brass, the brass ring pommel is thick and rugged, has a few deflective marks on it to, as does the protruding blade trap forward part of the guard, the hilt is solid with no movement and very ''tight '', the blade will ring if tapped with a finger nail, a sign of a well made blade.
My conclusion on his sword is that it likely is military and as it came from an estate sale in Uk via auction it is likely a British colonial bring back from one of the wars we had with the Chinese or at least were involved in, it is a very very fine example indeed and I am sure that someone out there will be very happy to own it.
size is in total 106cm, blade is 71.5cm, the spine thickness at the hilt is 10.8mm, at the tip is is 2mm, and at its widest point the blade is 8.6cm
I am adding one pic of this sword with the Hudiedao pair I also have listed here just to show the sheer size of this old dao, I am not an expect o0n Chinese swords although I have had many of them over many years but I'm sorry I do not know the correct Chinese term for this type large dao.
