antique 19thc pair of chinese hudiedao sword - knives wing chun baat jum dao asian butterfly sword

An exceptional pair of Hudiedao Butterly swords in original as made and found sheath, likely the best pair we have seen in many years online or in the antiques trade and we have had quite a few pairs of these but never in this amazing condition for age.

They are heavy in sheath, likely due to the copper alloy mounts on the sheaths which do add quite a bit to the weight, the blades are thick spined and have a false top edge at the tip on both sides of both knives - swords, the blades have undergone cleaning since found and have been etched to show the very active laminate, they are still very sharp.The hilts are made from a rosewood type wood and profusely carved on the rounded outer sides and flat on the other (see pics) they both fit into the same sheath and were often call side by side knives due to this, the ferrules at the top and bottom ends of the hilts are thick brass and are not loose or damaged, the guards I would say were a yellow bronze, very thick and chunky without any movement at all the tangs are through tangs and wide, they are peened at the pommel end, these were made for battle not for martial arts practice.The scabbard is made from thick leather which is hand sewn and fits these blades perfectly, the mounts on the scabbard - sheath are a thick copper alloy, none of the mounts are damaged.In all one of the very best pairs I have seen in many years, very well balanced and in the hands of someone who knows how to use them they would no doubt be lethal, but as collectors items they are the real deal and they do not come much better.size, both in scabbard - sheath are 60cm, out of scabbard - sheath they are 59cm, blades are 47.5cm on each one, spine thickness at the guard ends are 6.9mm on both swords, and at the very tips of each distil tapering blades they are 1.7mm.The balance and feel of these is pretty amazing in the hand, they are definitely an exceptional pair of hudiedao and considering what prices I see on these of lesser quality and condition my price is not high for them.
