Large Antique Reverse Decalcomania Glass Vase Jar With Lid - Mid 19th Century - RARE

An exceptional mid-19th century English internal decalcomania glass vase and cover, dating to circa 1850–1870. The baluster-form body and domed lid are richly decorated on the interior surface with vibrant botanical and ornithological motifs—exotic birds perched among flowering branches, butterflies in flight, and foliage rendered in a palette of crimson, ochre, emerald, and cerulean.
This form of decoration, popular in Victorian Britain, involved applying finely printed paper designs to the inside of the vessel, often over a coloured ground, and sealing them beneath a protective varnish. The technique preserved the colour and detail of the imagery while giving the piece a luminous depth visible through the outer glass.

Such vases were prized as ornamental parlour display pieces, reflecting the 19th century’s fascination with the natural world and the era’s skill in decorative arts. Comparable examples can be found in collections and at auction through Bonhams, Christie’s, and other leading dealers.

    Dimensions: 30cms x 19cms
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear; colours remain vivid and largely well-preserved under glass. Please examine photos as these form part of the the description.

    Barbara Harris

I am an avid collector of individual, unusual and interesting pieces of vintage and antique collectibles, sourced from auctions and antique events. I am particularly interested in rare figurines, Italian ceramics and glass, studio pottery, small pieces of furniture, brass instruments, cosmetic compacts, beaded purses etc. Favourite makers Minton, Beswick, Poole, Coalport, Wedgwood and Royal Doulton amongst many others. I do not have a website, but sell mainly through Etsy and eBay. I currently have a wide range of over 300 items for sale, with many ‘followers’ and regular customers. I live in a 16th Century cottage in the beautiful Wye Valley – perfect surroundings to cultivate my interest in all things vintage and antique. I am happy to supply more detailed photographs of the items for sale or to source ‘wanted’ pieces.
