Antique Manuscript Leaf of Two Bodhisattvas

Bodhisattva literally means a "bodhi (enlightenment) being" in Pali and Sanskrit. Mahayana practitioners have historically lived in many other countries that are now predominantly Hindu or Muslim; remnants of reverence for bodhisattvas has continued in some of these regions.

Here we have two bodhisattvas meditating. Between them is a ring with fish. Fish represent living in a state of fearlessness, happiness, and fertility. As fish swim in water without fear of drowning, Buddha has no fear of drowning in the suffering cycle of birth and rebirth.
