A small Chinese jar, decorated in underglaze blue, and dating from the mid Ming period c1500. The jarlet is decorated with branches of spiky foliage and flowers in an inky blue tone, under a thick blue-grey glaze. The unglazed base and rim have fired a pale pinkish colour. This jarlet would originally have had a lid, now lost. Height 9 cm (3.5")
An attractive small 500 year old jar with a tactile glaze typical of the period. The quickly-applied glaze does not covering the body in 3 small areas around the foot. On looking closely at these areas there appear to be fingerprints of the potter fired into the glaze, and it is possible that this is where the jar was held during manufacture.
Dating: Hongzhi (1488 - 1505)
