Pair of Arts & Crafts Era Turquoise Glazed Ceramic Relief Tile Plaques, c.1909
Children with Goat & Children with Dog, After Clodion
Attributed to Reginald Robert Tomlinson (1885–1978)
    Subject & Medium
A rare pair of Arts & Crafts era turquoise-glazed ceramic relief tile plaques, c.1909, richly finished in mottled teal-blue tones and mounted in their original gilt-lined ebonized frames.
The subjects, Enfants au Chien (Children with Dog & Satyr) and Enfants à la Chèvre (Children with Goat), are derived from Rococo reliefs by Claude Michel, known as Clodion (1738–1814), celebrated for his playful depictions of putti and Bacchic revelry.
    Composition & Technique
These plaques are cast in high relief with finely modelled textures, then finished with a lustrous Arts & Crafts glaze that enhances depth and sculptural detail.
Children with Goat (Enfants à la Chèvre): A lively group of children struggle with a goat — some tugging at its horns, others climbing over one another. The wiry coat of the animal contrasts against the rounded softness of the children’s bodies. Tomlinson’s glaze enlivens the Rococo dynamism of the scene.
Children with Dog (Enfants au Chien): Putti wrestle with a powerful hound, pulling at ropes while one child rides triumphantly on its back. The taut musculature of the animal is carefully modelled, its motion full of strength and vitality.
Together, the plaques fuse Clodion’s Rococo exuberance with the depth and richness of Arts & Crafts glazing.
    Inscribed / Verso / Signed
Unsigned, as typical of early or apprentice productions. Attributed to Reginald Robert Tomlinson, likely produced during his apprenticeship with Minton, Hollins & Co. c.1909, after Clodion.
