Circa 1900, top quality American oak roll top desk/bureau sold by ‘Stewart & Co, Glasgow’. The solid rectangular top has a moulded edge and a presentation plaque, and beneath this is an ‘S’ shaped slatted shutter with a stylish escutcheon with the retailers name and a double sided lock. When the shutter is open it reveals a well organised interior of almost 30 various sized drawers and pigeon holes and a large writing surface. There are 2 open apertures cut into the sides, which would have been for internal posting when the desk was locked. Below the top is a configuration of one long drawer in the centre and pull out slides over 4 graduating drawers on each side. The handles are carved oak and ribbed in an almost gadroon pattern. When the flap is closed this has a mechanism which locks the drawers. The sides of the desk have fielded panels, and the back is polished making it a freestanding piece. There is a fielded panel section at the back of the kneehole (known as a courtesy board). All standing on an enclosed plinth. Very good example of an American rolltop desk.

Georgian Antiques was founded in 1978 by John Dixon's brother Padriac in a small shop at Jocks Lodge, Meadowbank in Edinburgh, with John joining the business after finishing college in 1981. The business grew so rapidly, they couldn't keep up with their inventory needs. Their goal has been to create a one-stop-shop where designers can complete an entire project from antique lighting to antique furniture to accessories. Scotland's largest antiques warehouse is located in a converted whiskey bond in historic Leith Edinburgh. With 50,000sq ft over five floors we offer a wide range of quality Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian furniture, as well as continental and small decorative items. Our stock is constantly changing.
