A Pair of Late 19thC Framed Prints of Marine Scenes after Thomas Bush Hardy (Brit. 1842-97)

The renowned marine artist Thomas Bush Hardy was born in Sheffield. As a youth he travelled to America, where he fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War of 1860-65. He also travelled in Italy, France and Holland before returning to England.

He achieved enormous popularity and is best remembered for his paintings of the River Thames and shipping scenes off the English coast, the French channel ports and in the Venetian lagoon. He regularly exhibited work at the Royal Academy and the New Watercolour Society between 1871 and 1897 and, in 1884, was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. His work can be found in many major collections, including the Victoria & Albert and British Museums. He is regarded as one of the finest of English marine water-colourists.

He died in London in December 1897 and is buried on the Eastern side of Highgate Cemetery but without gravestone or marker. He was survived by eight children, of whom three became artists, the best known being Dudley Hardy (1867-1922) the painter, illustrator & poster designer.

These prints are of 'On the Medway' & 'Landing Fish, Scarborough', both dated 1874. They are contemporary prints, published by B Brooks & Sons (c1881-6) of 171 Strand, London WC and presented in the original gilt gesso frames. The prints themselves are in generally good condition, the colour still bright & clear, although there are some grey marks to the upper LHS of the Scarborough work. The mounts are faded with discolouration in vertical bands. The frames are showing wear & tear commensurate with age...the frame of the Medway work is generally sound but that of the Scarborough work is less so and has significant losses to the gesso, as seen in the photographs.
