Interesting antique composite heavy cavalry horseman’s sword. Comprising a large iron basket hilt with multi-bars, ovoid pommel and original wooden grip. A stirrup of Spanish type has been added to the base of the hilt to form a guard. The blade is of backsword type. The hilt was probably assembled in the 18th/19th Century by a local blacksmith and added to a contemporary blade – could have been produced during a period of emergency e.g war. Blade length is 32.5 (39 inches overall).
