A magnificent painted convex dial 8-day longcase clock, beautifully painted ship scene in the arch, showing quality artwork from the period.

Edward Pearce was born Chard in 1809. He married in Okehampton in 1830, stating that he was resident of Chard. From which time he moved to Crewkerne, Somerset. After being made bankrupt during this time, he left Crewkerne with his wife Margaret and three children about 1839. He carried on his profession in Southampton and Portsea. Margaret is recorded as a widow in 1861 in London.

This clock came is a most unloved condition. Although complete and original, it was very dirty - in fact there was so much grime on the dial that it was difficult to see what was there. Very careful cleaning without any cleaning materials brought the dial to what you see here - absolutely no restoration was required as the dirt had protected the paint. We are proud of the result which has brought the dial back to being as good as the day it was made. Similarly, the case took many hours of waxing after the muck had been taken off. The wood has most unusual grain. We believe it to be elm. Please note the beautiful and original hands. The movement is all original and of good quality.

All in all, a delight to see it back to pristine condition.
