    Antique Pair of Doulton Lambeth Stoneware Art Nouveau Vases by Eliza Simmance c1895

    An attractive pair of Doulton Lambeth stoneware Art Nouveau vases by Eliza Simmance c1895. Of narrow baluster-form with elongated neck and flared rim. Beautifully executed, stylised design of foliage and flowers which is mirrored between the pair of vases. Geometric band above and below. Gorgeously coloured, mottled ground in tonal greens with russet hues. Impressed Doulton Lambeth mark used until 1901. Signed with Eliza Simmance's monogram (E within an S) together with ‘BN’ for Bessie Newbery and ‘a’ for Louisa Ayling. The vases are 32.5 cm in height.
    These vases are in excellent original condition commensurate with age. No crazing, chips, cracks or restoration. Please see images as these form an important part of the description.

     
    Eliza Simmance, one of the earliest artists engaged, worked at Doulton Lambeth as an Artist and Designer between 1873 and 1928. She quickly became recognised as an original and versatile designer - winning many high awards at international exhibitions. Her work remains highly collectible. Bessie Newbery worked at Doulton from 1882 to 1924 – initially as a junior assistant, but soon promoted to senior assistant. By 1911 she was working as a supervisor and artist, designing original work from c1914 to 1924. Louisa Ayling worked as an assistant from 1877 until 1912.
