good chinese export armorial cup & saucer qianlong (arms of wodehouse, family of p g wodehouse)

A good quality and attractive Chinese export armorial coffee cup and saucer, decorated with famille rose enamels, and dating from the Qianlong period. The cup and saucer are decorated with the arms of Wodehouse with Berkeley in pretence, with two wild men supporters each holding a club (and together with the crest illustrating the family motto 'frappe forte', or 'strike hard'), within a delicately-painted garland border. The fine quality of the decoration can be appreciated in the close-up details. Saucer diameter 12.6cm (5")

Sir Armine Wodehouse, 5th Baronet, was a British Member of Parliament, succeeded to the Baronetcy in 1797 by his eldest son, Sir John Wodehouse. His descendants include the statesman Sir John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley, and the author P.G. Wodehouse.Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection. Purchased from Heirloom and Howard in 1999.Dating: Qianlong c 1782Condition:Excellent, undamaged condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. As can be appreciated from the images the enamels are also in excellent condition with only very minor wear.
