Gilt-Framed Original Signed Oil Painting on Board 'Lichtenberg, Alsace Lorraine' 1903 by Emile Schmidt-Wehrlin (Active 1890-1925)

Schmidt-Wehrlin was a prolific and talented turn of the Century painter of landscapes & townscapes. This charming and skilfully executed oil on board is of fields around the town of Lichtenberg in his native Alsace Lorraine and it is tempting to surmise that it might have been his home town?The territory of Alsace Lorraine was ceded by France to Germany in 1871 and only annexed by France at the end of the First World War in 1918. For this reason, there is considerable doubt about whether to attribute French or German citizenship to Schmidt-Wehrlin although, at the time this work was painted, he was clearly living in what was part of the German Empire.Height of Frame 27cm x Width 34.5cm (10.5" x 13.5")
