Doulton's "Impasto Ware" developed in the late 1870s was one of the most artistic and unusual products of the Lambeth Pottery. Different from Faience in that the decoration was applied to the raw clay which caused the applied colour to thicken. The artist could then build-up colour giving a depth to the design in relief. Impasto production peaked in the 1890s however was discontinued by 1914.
Rosa Keen had previously worked at the Minton Art Pottery Studio before working at Doulton Lambeth from 1882 to 1892. She was on of the chief exponents of the Impasto technique.
