An extremely rare and unique very fine antique novelty amusing pottery figure of a medieval court jester holding a bottle and goblet in mottled polychrome colours. By tipping the figure forward his long curved tongue comes out and by tipping it back again it goes back in.
We are calling this 19th century but it could be earlier
Good Antique Condition with just a little bit of colour loss as expected
4.25 inches (11cm) width approx
One of our customers has kindly suggested the following: 'He's a bitters dispenser. He was filled with bitters through the hole on his hat with the aid of a funnel, a finger was placed on the hole, a tilt brought the bitters to the head, and gentle shaking allowed the bitters to drip down his loose tongue into the drink'. He is only going by the images and has not handled it so please be aware there is no hole in the hat but there appears to be one in the 'bottom' so may still work from here (please note the figure is holding a bottle so certainly a plausible idea). Certainly as he has suggested it is some sort of executive antique toy. If anyone has any ideas and sources please let us know. The piece is certainly extremely unusual and an amusing novelty
