In the 18th century sailors began to ship loggerhead turtles back to Britain, during the voyage the turtle meat would be consumed and the scutes were removed to be sold to cover tea caddies and the likes. When back in Britain the shells were polished to a high sheen and sold as curiosities. It was fashionable to use such shells as fire screens. This example is of the finest sheen displaying a beautiful and unusual white and black patina.
