regency tortoiseshell tea caddy

Circa 1820, Regency tortoiseshell tea caddy. The tea caddy, with its bow-fronted shape, slightly raised and pagoda top, which is surmounted by what will have been a silver-plated knob (the plating has come off revealing the brass beneath). The top opens to reveal two compartments inside, each with ivory handles and tortoise shell lids. The compartments retain most of their original lining. The front of the tea caddy has a small, rectangular escutcheon with canted corners and it has been monogrammed with the letters ‘W. M. B’. There is a silver string inlay, which dissects this escutcheon and the front. This silver inlay also occurs down the sides and again down the back, symmetrically. Between the lid and the body, there’s a boxwood inlay and this is visible when the lid is open. At the bottom there is felt and the tea caddy has lost its original bun feet. Saying that, this blonde tortoise shell tea caddy has good colour and good condition.
