A very impressive Nuremberg Strongbox / Armada Chest. Circa 1600.

This fascinating wrought iron trunk would have served as a safe place to store, carry and transport gold and silver for trade purposes aboard ships and vessels across the seas, into the 17th century.

The complex locking mechanism is a wonderful display of engineering meets art. Intricate decorative leaf shapes and wrought iron work intertwine with the locking mechanism, creating a wild display and making for a fantastic conversation piece.

A deep earthy red paint frames the mechanism underneath the lid whilst also adorning the inside of the chest. A smaller box compartment with locking lid (no longer with key) sits to the left, with its own mechanism underneath.

There is some indistinct white lettering at the right hand side of the chest, with a possible surname beginning 'Mc' still visible and partially intact.

The chest sits on top of a later period oak stand, with scrolled lower edge, over four simple squared legs and block feet. A truly stunning display item, and suitable for an entrance hallway, bay window adornment, or reception room.

    Period: Elizabeth I (Circa 1600)

    Measurements (on stand): W85cm x D42cm x H120cm | W33in x D16in x H47in
