A very very rare Siamese - Thai late 18thc -19thc Thonburi period to early Rattanakosin period Thai dha - Daab sword SE Asian knife in silver mounts & silver inlay blade

Dating from the late 18thc to early 19thc this rare Thai Daab- dha sword according to a Thai expert is very rare a and valuable sword, likely from the period of King Taksin at Thonburi kingdom ending in 1782, the style is unique to the period later 18thc to early 19thc and the decorative style of the 925 grade silver mounts certainly align with the repousse silver work of that period - time, the hilt is in traditional Ayutthaya knitted cord patten that has many layers of lacquer applied, in itself this part of the sword is not just a grip but a protective Buddhist amulet - takrood.The guard is made from iron and is covered with a layer of suede leather, I have tested with a magnet which sticks hard to it, the style of the guard being small is typically Thai - Siamese, it appears similar to a Japanese tsuba type guard only because it has a small hole in it on one side, this was likely for passing a cord through to secure the sword in its leather covered wooden sheath - scabbard.The blade of the sword is I am told by a Thai expert likely at least 50 to 100 years older than the mounts it is in, it likely dates from the end of the Ayutthaya period as there are examples of the type of silver inlay work on many older Ayutthaya kingdom swords and it can be considered a blade made for a higher ranked man, maybe military maybe a Thai mandarin or someone in high office or an official status man.
The blade is not in a typical style for Thai swords, it is closer to the old lotus bud tip ''hua bua'' in Thai, there are many tip shapes for Thai swords and this would be the closest to it.There is a possible makers mark on it at the forte on one ide of the blade but If it is a makers mark then I can decipher it.The blade is thick and heavy, it has wear through sharpening but it does not have any damage to the cutting edge, it's an old blade and likely a re used one so has been around for a very long time, could be as old as early middle 18thc ? And the silver inlay work on the blade top edge and spine is beautifully executed, this type work is not seen on swords from this region unless they were royal or spacial.The scabbard - sheath is made from leather with a single interior wood section, the leather is very old and the top of section has 2 flaps that have holes in fir a cord, this would lot the guard and hold the sord in place while being back carried and would have been wound with the cord around the bottom end, I believe was made for back slung carry as is common in Thailand, the guard being padded with suede leather would stop the iron guard from damaging its owner who's first weapon was likely a spear.I can tell you no more about the sword other than it was purchased in UK from south east England and was according to the auctioneer at the auction I got it from a number of years ago it came from a large estate in that region.Sizes, the total length is sheath - scabbard is 89cm, out of scabbard it is 80.2cm, the blade is 52.5cm, at its widest point it is 45.33 mm, the spine is 9.5mm thick at the hilt end and has a v ridge to it, at the tip end of the spine the blade is 2.3mm thick.We have had many antique Burmese Thai and Laos dha in our many years of dealing in south east Asian antiques and edged weapons and this sword by far for me is the best we have ever had so far, a very important historical weapon that needs to be in the right collection and hopefully in Thailand where it really does belong, I am hoping it will make the journey back there to its rightful home in a collection.I have included some info on the period this sword is from below, feel free to make an offer but please do understand that this is a rare piece and I will not accept low offers, if you intend offering a low off do not bother as I will not get back to you.We are antiques dealers so do like to haggle so please do make an offer, and please do look at our other items as many more will be added here soon.If you are looking for something in particular then please do ask as we may have it, we have heaps of stock from all over Asia but mostly south east Asia and many antique edged weapons to.Contact us for shipping prices please, we ship worldwide by various methods including courier services with full tracking etc, we do not ship to Russia China or Vietnam and a number of other countries which are not safe to ship to so please do ask if we ship to you.We do not take returns, due to nanny state uk rules we can not have any returns as they would be considered '' not allowed '' by UK customs, please do your research before buying or making an offer, we all should.
The Thonburi Kingdom (1767–1782) was founded by King Taksin after the fall of Ayutthaya kingdom situated at Ayutthaya.
Taksin reunited the shattered country, expanded its borders, and established his capital at Thonburi due to its strategic position for seaborne trade and defense.
The era defined a period of rapid reunification, foreign warfare, and economic revival for Siam.
The Fall of Ayutthaya & Rise of King Taksin, In 1767, the Burmese sacked Ayutthaya, leaving Siam fragmented into five warring states.
King Taksin, a general of Sino-Siamese descent, gathered a fleet, conquered Chanthaburi as his base, and successfully drove the Burmese out of the Chao Phraya river delta.
Coronation & New Capital, Crowned on December 28, 1767, Taksin established his capital at Thonburi. Because Ayutthaya was largely destroyed, he built his royal headquarters at Thonburi palace.
Territorial Expansion, Taksin spent his entire reign fighting. He reunified the kingdom, expanded Siamese control over the Lanna kingdom in the north, annexed parts of Cambodia, and extended influence deep into Laos.
Cultural and Economic Revival, The King encouraged Chinese immigration and trade, which quickly helped stabilize the economy after the wars. He also restored temples, promoted Buddhist studies, and revived the arts.
End of the Kingdom, The brief 15-year period ended in 1782 when Taksin was deposed in a coup and executed.
His top general, Chao Phraya Chakri, took the throne as Rama I and moved the capital across the river, founding the current Rattanakosin (Bangkok) Kingdom.
