Victorian branding iron - initials 'JA' - with historical document. Mounted on an oak plinth.
A rare relic of our agricultural past, mentioning both the Airey and Wainwright families, and the towns of Rigg and Penrith.
Document on rear of plinth reads:
'JOSEPH AIREY left RIGGS at Whitsuntide 1871.
He wrote 'there was neither Cow nor Pig to be kept and I have taken a house at Penrith.(no. 5 Benson Row) close to your Aunt Belle.it is a good deal betterhouse than hers and is a greaty rent.' The branding iron was kept by him and later by his so John, his grandson Joseph and his great grandson Philip Wainwright who mounted it on this board in 1965.'
