A charming Chinese export lacquer Tea Caddy, of sarcophagus shape. The caddy stands on tiny carved wood, lions paw feet. The caddy is of sarcophagus shape with canted corners and cushion top. The lacquer is black with over painted gilt decoration of chinoiserie scenes surrounded by gilded scrolls. The caddy is in English country house condition, the lacquer decoration is worn and there are dints, but it has a wonderful untouched patina, which can only be achieved with two hundred years of polishing. The caddy retains the pair of paktong interior tea canisters which are profusely engraved with flowers, they also retain the interior lids, paktong is a soft metal and the canisters are quite dented, but viewed from the top when the lid is open like fine. It has also a working lock and key.
This item has a wonderful untouched English country house feel to it, it has been used for two hundred years and shows the marks, but it has developed with that a wonderful patina only use and age can give an antique.
