The Madonna della seggiola or Madonna della sedia is a Madonna painting by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael, dating to c. 1513-1514 and housed in the Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence. It depicts Mary embracing the child Christ, while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches.

Painted during his Roman period, this Madonna does not have the strict geometrical form and linear style of his earlier Florentine treatments of the same subject. Instead, the warmer colors seem to suggest the influence of Titian and Raphael's rival Sebastiano del Piombo.

Maria Montessori, Italian doctor and pioneer in pedagogy, wrote that it was her wish that the Madonna della seggiola hang in each Children's House (Montessori school) as a symbol of "humanity [St. John] rendering homage to maternity [Madonna]".

ABOUT THE ARTIST: RAPHAELLO SANZIO (B1483-D1520)

For centuries Raphael has been recognised as the supreme High Renaissance painter, more versatile than Michelangelo and more prolific than their older contemporary Leonardo. Though he died at 37, Raphael's example as a paragon of classicism dominated the academic tradition of European painting until the mid-19th century.

Raphael (Raffaello Santi) was born in Urbino where his father, Giovanni Santi, was court painter. He almost certainly began his training there and must have known works by Mantegna, Uccello, and Piero della Francesca from an early age. His earliest paintings were also greatly influenced by Perugino. From 1500 - when he became an independent master - to 1508 he worked throughout central Italy, particularly Florence, where he became a noted portraitist and painter of Madonnas.

In 1508, at the age of 25, he was called to the court of Pope Julius II to help with the redecoration of the papal apartments. In Rome he evolved as a portraitist, and became one of the greatest of all history painters.

He remained in Rome for the rest of his life and in 1514, on the death of Bramante, he was appointed architect in charge of St Peter's.

    ANALYSIS OF THE PAINTING:
Composed in 1514, by one of the most famous artist of his time, Madonna Della Seggiola, also known as “Madonna Of The Chair,” is an excellent example of high Renaissance artistry. This masterpiece was painted in Rome, by 31 year old Italian painter Raphael Santi. Today the painting is displayed in the Palazzo Pitti, in Florence, Italy. Seeing it for the first time in the seventh edition of The Western Humanities textbook, on page 356, I was very drawn to the apparent affection that was portrayed between the woman and the child. After reading a bit of background information on the painting, I learned that it was created as a depiction of Christ, held by his mother Mary, as young John the Baptist stands behind them looking upon them.

Raphael’s “Madonna Of The Chair,” was painted in oil based paints. The painting itself was composed on a circular wooden panel, with 2' and 5? diameter (textbook). Many paintings during the Renaissance implemented the usage of oil paints. In fact, during the Renaissance period, “oil painting techniques had almost completely replaced tempera paints in the majority of Europe.” (Wiki).

I find the most intriguing use of lines to be used in the form of curvatures in this painting. The entire painting itself is circular. As stated in the textbook, “the circular composition makes the three figures appear even more intimate, as it narrows the spaces between their bodies.”(textbook, p. 356). This painting is very intimate. Its displays a great deal of affection. The bodies, and draperies in the painting feature repetitive curves, causing the subjects along with the other objects in the painting to sort of hug one another, further enhancing the intimacy of the painting, while also giving it a very relaxed feel.

Forms used in this painting are dimensional shapes of the 3 human bodies displayed. The use of shading, and incorporating light hues with darker ones, seems to give the painting its dimensionality. I have also noted how the mother, Mary’s arm and neck for a U-shape that is inverted with the U-shaped entirety of the Christ-child’s body. The two hooked U-shapes also bring about the form in the painting. The forms are objective, as they are not exaggerated or diluted in any way, and are actual representations of what could be real. The use of form, along with the use of line in this painting is most likely the two elements that bring about a sense of affection and peace upon viewing it.

Colors used in the painting are very vivid. The clothing of both the mother and child are bright. The exposed skin of Mary and Christ are painted in such a precise manner, that they seem to be illuminated, almost as if to glorify them. Young John the Baptist, which is situated slightly to the side and behind Mary and Christ, is darker in hue, making him not quite as noticeable and the appearance of less importance in the painting. This could quite possibly be, because the painting was created for Mary and Jesus to be the focal points of the artwork.

By limiting the amount of space in this painting, along with the repeated curvatures and interconnected forms, Raphael created a great deal of depth. The space that is behind the three individuals is dark and drab, which only further accentuates the focal point of the artwork, which is the three beings displayed, but namely Mary and Jesus Christ.

    CONDITION
Excellent condition throughout still retaining the bright vivid colours and sharpness.
